Let's go fly a kite!

I love weekends because we spend quality time together as a family and I really enjoy spending unrushed time with Andrew ... week nights are always so busy. This weekend we enjoyed the beautiful weather on Saturday by walking to the park in our neighborhood (Andrew in his Radio Flyer wagon and Tyler in the Ergo carrier).

Doug surprised Andrew by buying him a Cars themed kite that we flew at the retention pond near the park. Andrew really enjoyed helping Daddy with the kite and holding the line. Tyler and I took the opportunity to sit back and watch. (Note: if you click on the photo you can see a larger view)

We have been reading a book about Elmo flying a kite for ages, so Andrew knew exactly what we were doing - it amazes me how much little kids remember! Andrew and Daddy were quite the team. When Daddy decided to let out the entire line and shortly thereafter the kite took a nose dive, Andrew ran out to retrieve the kite and to help Daddy bring in the line. All in all, I would say that it was a very successful kite flying afternoon!

Saturday afternoon after Andrew's nap it was off to church. Church is quite an adventure with 2 little ones. Tyler slept the entire service in his car seat so he was easy ... but a certain 2.5 year old was not so quiet. Andrew can sit through 5 minutes of the service - ten minutes if we are lucky - before he gets a major case of 'ants in his pants' where he wants to climb or talk or generally do things that should not be done during a church service. Now, there are lots of kiddos at this church service and you can usually hear the soft sounds of little voices through out the service so members of the congregation seem to be understanding. However, Douglas is very conservative and does not want to bother anyone (and rightly so), so when Andrew started making noise, they left the pews and moved to the back of the church. At one point I looked back at them and Doug was stifling a laugh. Apparently, Douglas told Andrew he needed to sit on his bottom and he did, but Andrew noticed that Douglas was crouching down, so Andrew told Daddy to "sit on his bottom!"

After church we went to the mall to run some errands and to get Andrew ice cream for being "good" (and I use that term lightly) at church. More than anything we are trying to establish a routine so that Andrew knows IF he is good at church we will go get ice cream afterwards. Well, the mall near the church has a carousel and Andrew decided that he had to ride the "horsey". I told him that he could ride the horse after we ran our errands ... wow, we heard nothing but "I want to ride the horsey" and "I ride the horsey" for the next 30 minutes! When Andrew finally rode the horse, he had a great time. This was somewhat of a surprise for us since up until now he was afraid of moving animals on the carousel. The couple of times that we tried in the past, we ended up sitting on one of the carriages that don't move and he watched the other children. Not this time though - he loved it! Too bad I didn't have my camera!

One of the errands that we ran included stopping at Target. I have been looking for a pair of frog rain boots for Andrew for months at Target, but they are always out of his size. Well, they finally had his size - I got the last pair - and Andrew loves them! In fact, he put them on by himself on the way home and has been wearing them off and on all day since then. Doug has insisted that I hide them on Monday so that he will not insist on wearing them to school!

You can see him sporting his cool shoes in the photo to the right. What you can't see is that Andrew is wearing potty training pants! This picture was taken shortly before his first accident ... ahhh, the joys of parenting! :) In all seriousness, we are really trying to encourage Andrew to use the potty, but he doesn't want to stop playing to use the potty. Right now we have to ask him every 30 minutes if he needs to use the potty or we take him and ask him to try, just in case. The good news is that he likes to use the potty (when he wants to) and eventually he will decide that he doesn't want to walk around in wet diapers anymore! In the mean time, he gets 2 M&Ms every time he uses the potty, and he gets 4 if he tells us he needs to use the potty without us having to remind him. You can send M&Ms for the cause to ...

Tyler has been a trooper ... he goes along for the ride for the most part right now. As long as he has been fed, he is a happy camper. We took our first solo outing (just Mommy and Tyler) on Friday so that I could shop for new running shoes. Thankfully, he slept the whole excursion! He has been pretty good on our walks too (knock on wood). Tyler had his first shower today and he was a champ - not a single tear was shed! We have been giving him sponge baths, but they are a pain and I wanted to bathe him today so we decided to try the shower since Andrew loves it, and it was a success! Plus, as a bonus, it didn't take long at all! So, Tyler had a first shower before having a first bath (at home at least since he got his first real bath at the hospital).

The only other Tyler news to report is that he appears to have two blocked tear ducts, which is very common in babies his age. They usually open by a child's first birthday, but until then, it means he gets "gunk" in his eyes. Andrew had a similar issue when he was a week old that led to an infection and he spent 4 days at Texas Children's. We are keeping a close eye (no pun intended) on Tyler's eyes to make sure that he does not get an infection. I did some reading today on what to do to help open the ducts and I am going to talk to his pediatrician tomorrow to make sure that we are following the correct course of action and to see if a different eye drop might help. Tyler's eyes are just too sweet to be mired with gunk!

And just like that ... another weekend is over! Boy, does time fly by when you are having fun!
